Baby reaching ornament on tree
Baby reaching ornament on tree

Is your baby finally crawling and pulling themselves up or starting to walk and now it’s time to set up the holiday tree in the house?   Don’t worry about it too much. There are lots of ways to have a safe holiday season and still enjoy the your holiday tree and decorations.

Does your tree contain lots of breakable ornaments?  How about setting the tree in a room that you can block off the entire room with baby gates so it’s off limits to baby except when the family is together?

Make sure you use an artificial tree so it is not shedding needles and there is no bowl of water for little ones to play in. Don’t use tinsel on your tree as tinsel is a major choking hazard for small children.  Use unbreakable ornaments if possible and hang from the tree with loops of ribbon and not the sharp wire hangers.  Tiny hands love to grab colorful things within reach.  Of course, you can leave the lower half of the tree without ornaments. Or put your non-breakable ornaments at the bottom of the tree.   Tuck lights to the back of the branches and out of reach so baby can’t grab a string of lights.

You can always purchase a fence that goes around the tree and keeps little ones out.

Remember, the holidays is a fun time to spend with little ones and exploring all the sights and sounds of the season.  Spend time teaching your little one by looking at the colorful decorations, reading lots of Christmas books, and enjoying the Christmas music.  Make the holidays a special time from the start.

Wishing you all a Happy Holidays!
